How It Works.
Youthworks College prioritises an integrated approach to theological study in partnership with a local church or other ministry placement. Students learn both in the classroom, but also in their ministry placement.
Students receive group supervision at College from our staff and their peers, and also receive regular personal supervision at their ministry placement.
Student Support Services. Youthworks College provides links to a range of support services for students, including medical, legal, counselling, and learning resources. Access the student support services here.
Example Week
For on campus students, a standard full-time study load at Youthworks College is 2 days per week on Monday & Tuesday during semester. This enables students to work out a variety of ministry placement options from Wednesday to Sunday.
Youthworks-MTS Pathway
Doing the Youthworks-MTS pathway looks the same in practice as ordinarily studying at Youthworks College full-time. The difference is that raising money through MTS has tax incentives that may make raising funds for a student ministry position more achievable. If your ministry supporters would benefit from making tax-deductible donations, then this is a good option to explore.
Studying via the Youthworks-MTS pathway also allows you to complete both the MTS program AND gain an Advanced Diploma in the same time it would take you to do either one on its own!
FEES.
Financial Assistance
FEE-HELP: If you are an Australian citizen and are intending to complete the whole course (either full-time or part-time), you may be eligible to receive FEE-HELP. FEE-HELP is an interest-free loan from the Australian Government to assist students to pay all or part of their tuition fees. You will later repay this loan once your income exceeds a certain threshold. For more information on FEE-HELP and how to apply, please click here.
Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY, ABSTUDY: Youthworks College is registered with Centrelink as a higher education provider, meaning eligible students can apply for Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY and/or ABSTUDY. For more information on Centrelink and how to apply please click here.
Student Remuneration: Please click here for the current Anglican Diocese of Sydney’s minimum stipend for ministry trainees studying for a Diploma. This also contains stipend information for paid youth and children’s ministers.
Churches and students should also be aware that the Fringe Benefits Tax act allows for exempt benefits to be paid to a ‘student at an institution who is undertaking a course of instruction in the duties of a minister of religion.’ The Anglican Church Diocese of Sydney has determined that for students who hold the Archbishop’s licence and are working two or three days in a parish with teaching and pastoral responsibilities of a similar nature to those that would be expected of an assistant or lay minister, it would be reasonable for the parish to consider the payment of college fees (tuition, boarding etc) on behalf of that student minister as an exempt benefit.
The bill for non-Fee-HELP College expenses can be sent directly to the students church. Please contact the College office on (02) 8093 3400 for more information or to make those arrangements.
Students participating in the Youthworks-MTS Pathway may also be eligible to receive additional financial support from Government provided allowances (e.g. AUStudy or ABStudy for Aboriginal for Torres Strait Islander students).
