Where Are They Now? Amy Robson

Amy is passionate about helping children learn and loves interacting with them, “They're just so wonderful, and funny and quirky. When you see something click for a child, and their eyes just light up and their brains burst, it's just so beautiful!”

Amy is now teaching a Year 1 class at Shire Christian School. She is so thankful that she can bring together her two passions, to teach children and the gospel of Jesus.

In 2020 Amy married Owen, a student at Moore College who is now in fourth year. He is looking forward to working in a church next year, and they are both looking forward to the birth of their first baby in June/early July.

Amy decided to do an Advanced Diploma of Theology in 2018. She was a full-time primary teacher in a state school and really wanted to go to Bible College. She realised that if she took up a permanent position, she wouldn’t have time to do this, so she decided to go part time at school in order to study.

She remembers, “It worked really well because I could study theology and ministry on Monday and Tuesday, and also stay at school to do learning support.” Amy really wanted to study the Bible and understand the big picture, “What drew me to Youthworks was that it was part time and had a focus on children's and youth ministry. I could earn money and upskill in my profession. It made me more employable for future work in a Christian School.”

Teaching as well as studying was challenging for Amy,  she needed to be very organised and have clear boundaries. Amy had to think, “This is my college day, and this is my study day. There's a lot of forward thinking and that's a skill you need as a teacher.”

 The thing that Amy really enjoyed was being in God’s word with like-minded people, “There are friends that I have made for life - we shared experiences and we shared learning.” Amy continues to reflect on all she learnt through the College Formation Intensive (Tour) by reading Life Together every April!

 At the Shire Christian School, Amy is able to talk to the kids about the gospel and how they can respond and live it out. Many of the children come from Christian families, so she wants to teach the kids from ministry principles that she learnt at college, “I want to nurture them as disciples and encourage them to be disciple-making disciples.”

 Amy also believes that at college she learnt how to reflect on what she is now doing at school,

“Good practise is reflecting…what you have learnt, how does that apply and what can I do better next time?”.

“God gives us an opportunity every time we are with the children in the classroom, that is the time to share Christ's love to the kids, and even parents too. Let's make the time worthwhile, it is a ministry opportunity.”

Amy is enthusiastic about the new Centre for Christian Education, “I’m so jealous, I want to go back and do this. When you are a teacher, there is no time to do the study of the Bible, theology and ministry. It’s best to do it beforehand and have a good foundation, because it's going to get harder.”

• Praise God that Amy is at a Christian school where she doesn’t have to hide her identity. That she is free to share the gospel.

• Praise for the baby that Amy is expecting in June/early July.

• Pray for the family as they face many changes and challenges throughout this year.
